Gary Brooks



Gary has over 16 years' experience as a specialist data protection and information rights expert and has provided data protection compliance advice to some of the UK's leading businesses, including secondments to Tesco and BP.

He has particular expertise of the data protection compliance issues affecting retailers, e-businesses, financial services organisations and television production companies, but has experience across all sectors including the public sector.

Gary read law at Cambridge University before commencing his legal training at city law firm Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) , qualifying in 2001 as a specialist data protection lawyer. Gary headed the Data Protection Unit at BLP from 2004 to 2007, before setting up his data protection consultancy business. In addition to servicing his own clients, he provides consultancy services to leading consultancy, Privacy Laws & Business.

Gary is a regular contributor to legal and industry journals on privacy and information law matters and contributed the chapter on "Individuals' rights" to the Law Society's Data Protection Handbook. He has spoken at conferences on data protection and e-privacy issues.
